GROOVER Review: MIKE AND THE MOLOTOVS ‘Red White And F@#k You’

Marketing and promo is everything these days, and despite my constant grumblings about bands not sending enough information with their songs, I have to give credit where it’s due.

The new track Red White And Fuck You sent to me by Mike And The Molotovs came with this one line “…imagine if The Devil Went Down to Georgia was written by the Dead Kennedys.” That’s it. No bio, no info on the song.

No fucks given by me. They have won me straight up.

Starting with the sound of school kids reciting the American National Anthem rockabilly style, guitars soon set the wheels in motion before punk and anarchistic intent add themselves to the mix in a fun and infectious manner.

The vocals are like Dead Kennedys while the music is more in keeping with The Stray Cats, but it mixes flawlessly. Just try to get this far without getting the urge to slap your thigh at least once.

The band seems intent on getting a message across, too. It’s a pretty simple one, but one which needs to be heard by many a person out there. Curious?

Well, don’t be, unless you enjoy someone yelling “fuck you” in your direction, which I most certainly do!

I might be wrong, but it sounds like fiddles being played in the background, which is confirmed approaching the minute mark when they become more prominent in the mix. It really shouldn’t work, but does – and well at that.

The band soon gets bored again before a rockabilly riff fires up, gradually increasing in pace until it becomes a punk hoe down.

And then, with one final “fuck you”, Mike And The Molotovs fade from earshot, probably moving onto the next mob who need to hear those two poignant words.
