GROOVER Review: VAN HOOSE ‘Dancing With Demons’

Share This:

Collaborative metal outfit Van Hoose have unleashed their new track Dancing With Demons and despite the fact I don’t dance full stop, for some reason I am overly keen to check this one out.

A soft and touching intro momentarily has me second-guessing my motives, but it doesn’t take long for things to spice up before a ferociously vicious voice takes charge quite unexpectedly.

Given the ambient nature of the initial leanings, I expected a more rock-oriented vocal delivery, but this is next level.

And awesome.

Think a mix of keys and soft rock laced with demonic obsession, and you are on the right track.

Despite the fact it came completely out of left field, the disparity between the two musical outputs is actually quite striking. It shouldn’t work, but somehow does, which shows me that Van Hoose have put a lot of thought and experimentation into this particular piece of music.

There’s pain and anger seeping through the harshness of the vocals, with things erring more on the side of oppression due to the cathartic and soothing backing instrumentalization.

A nice mini breakdown of sorts around the 2.30 mark hints at a possible denigration into chaos, but Van Hoose hold firm on their musical mismatch, allowing the contrasting forces of nature to continue unabated and at the mercy of themselves.

Even as the track draws to a close, I find myself at odds with what has just transpired, but the song certainly made me think.

Which is more than most efforts do in the modern age.
