ZOMBONIMO Find Their Voice

Newcastle hard rock outfit Zombonimo recently released their latest single “Speak”.

Featuring a three-pronged vocal attack, Zombonimo have been plying their trade for over a decade, with the band still retaining all four original members.

Guitarist/vocalist Kim Abbott sat down with HEAVY earlier this week to chat about the new single and what the future holds for Zombonimo.

“We are a bit of a crossover band,” he explained, “like rock/heavy rock with a sprinkle of metal thrown in there. We’re a four-piece band with three vocalists – not just the one, but three – and “Speak” we have sat on for a while and we wanted to put something out and it was one of those songs that captured all elements of us in the band. There’s a little bit of heaviness, a bit of groove, it captured the three vocals and it’s a bit longer. Some people like to tell us it’s too long but we really don’t care (laughs). It’s about how, when you write a song, what comes out. That’s sort of what came out and how we recorded that song was really cool as well. There’s a guy called James that lives at the Gold Coast now but he was down here at the time with a mobile studio – he comes to you – and he came around to our band central and set everything up and did everything basically in our jam room. It was a really cool vibe and all came together really well and he made it sound exactly what we wanted to try and capture our sound. I think some of the feedback we have gotten over the years is live we’re brutal and we’re big and we’re noisy and some of the recordings we’ve done haven’t quite captured that sound. It’s something that we really wanted to do this time around was capture that and it’s come across well. Lyrically, it’s about having a voice and also using it wisely. Everybody tries to beat us down with words and fuck ’em. Don’t believe them. Believe yourself. Everybody’s got a voice, be heard, don’t think that you need to be silenced. There’s too many haters in the world today and if you listen to the lyrics it captures a meaning. Music with meaning.”

In the full interview Kim talks about the killer film clip to go with “Speak”, the story premise of it and the red herrings thrown in, the origin of the band name and how to pronounce it, having the same lineup for 12 years, their plans for 2021 and more.
