MOLLY & THE KRELLS Get Straight To The Point

After initially releasing the track “What Went Wrong” in February of this year, Molly & The Krells have now released it again, this time with a brilliant film clip that adds depth and extra layers to the story. Bass player and vocalist Blake Cateris sat down with HEAVY to delve further into the song.

“I went through about seven or eight drafts of this song before I took it to the band,” he said. “I started on an acoustic guitar playing around with chords and had a bunch of lyrics, but the lyrics I had were originally put to completely different music. It just wasn’t sitting right and didn’t hit the mark so I decided to save it and wait for something to come along that suited it better and eventually that did, I started writing this song at the start of 2018 and slowly kept refining it and it holds its own as an acoustic song – and there’s a saying that if it doesn’t sound good at its absolute foundations you are really going to struggle to make it hold its own in any other arrangement whatsoever. So I tried to get it right at the source, which was my voice and acoustic guitar, then took it to the band. In terms of lyrics, I was inspired by a situation where there was this girl in our circle of friends who was quite self-centred. She had her own list of issues as well but whenever someone would reach out or lend a helping hand or an ear to listen and let her talk some things out it was never really met in a friendly way. It was quite a difficult situation where it got to the point it was too difficult to try and help her deal with what she was going through.”

In the full interview Blake goes further into the song and the story behind it, tells why there is a gap of 8 months between the song and the video and grappling with the idea of even releasing it at all, new music from the band, naming albums and the humour behind it and more.
