Dusting Off The Cobwebs With PAUL DOIG From ZAGTAR

“We wanted something similar to that with a bit of groove, a bit of thrash and a bit of punk and that type of thing with 1000 other things probably thrown into it (laughs).”

Brisbane metal outfit Zagtar certainly subscribe to the old-school ideologies of music.

Since forming back in 2016 the band has only released one EP – Deadly Curve – in 2017 and played only a select number of shows, preferring to hone their craft into something they are completely satisfied with before making their assault on the music world at large.

They encompass a plethora of genres within their music, ranging from traditional metal to thrash to groove and even punk, but sprinkle enough of their unique flavouring into the mix to create an entirely new beast altogether.

With their debut album Primordial Mother coming out on November 19, Zagtar frontman Paul Doig sat down with HEAVY to discuss the album and the band’s gradual rise to prominence.

“We always endeavored doing an album that was like the mid-paced Slayer album South Of Heaven,” he began. “We wanted something similar to that with a bit of groove, a bit of thrash and a bit of punk and that type of thing with 1000 other things probably thrown into it (laughs).”

Primordial Mother marks Zagtar’s first release since Deadly Curve five years ago, and shows the extent of the band’s growth in that period.

“Musically, this one is a lot heavier, and we went with the harsh vocals,” Doig explained. “That one was kind of going for a blend of Alice In Chains with a bit of thrash thrown in. This time around we decided we were just going to go full heavy with no real clean vocals. Just the harsh vocals.”

In the full interview, Paul talks more about what to expect from Primordial Mother, their mixing of genres and how it works, the reasons behind a six-year gap between the band forming and releasing their debut album, where he thinks Zagtar will fit in to the modern music world, what three songs from the album best encapsulate Zagtar’s sound, the importance of enjoying your music, upcoming shows and more.
