If you are a follower of my on/off again contributions to this fine HEAVY publication, then you may have come across my musings of death metal South AusTasBourne (just made that accurate living destination of the members up on the fly – LOL) brutal bastards WEREWOLVES.

Album trifecta in three for three, From the Cave to the Grave warms up the path well exploited by Sam (vocals/bass), Matt (guitar) and Dave (drums) on previous explorations. Fans of the band’s previous releases are well groomed to tolerate what is cataclysmically spewed from their speakers. 34 odd minutes or punishing apocalyptic pure death metal.

Werewolves are literal purists of the genre, be sure! Few bands stay true to the craft of any metal traditionalism these days, we are all too aware that many bands and the musicians within them are trying to out noodle one another or whatever means of unnecessary wankery it takes to get lost in the plethora of extreme mediocrity around them, which is a shame but also a blessing because we of the old guard of metal hierarchy (LOL again) can pick pretentiousness in our metal like a dirty nose. It smells like the turd of try hard elitism and gets turned off after thirty seconds of the opening song due to its putrid stench!

Werewolves DO NOT fall under the above banner. Why? Well…

The work on audio show here is clearly that of members that have burning need and innate ability/desire to extract pent up artistic extremism quickly and often (again I reiterate – Werewolves = 3 albums / 3 years) without losing the quality of their artistic talent or their integrity. This trio, as bearers of the traditional DM flame are intent on keeping the misanthropic mastery that it demands well illuminated.

2022’s From the Cave to the Grave is an honest Werewolves release not because of inner ideological musings of the albums content – see Self Help Book Burning, We Are Better Than You, Oedipus Tyrannus but only in as much as the beautifully crafted and insane brutality it contains. The influences and influence of Matt, Dave and Sam are without question and within Werewolves and all they release is the perfect sum of all the parts both preceding and ensuing them.
