Whenever I hear the words blues, rock and controversy used to describe a band and their music, my ears instantly prick up.
Throw in a catchy and ambiguously funny name like Uncle Watson’s Widow and you pretty much have won me over already.
But does the music live up to the hype?
New single Iron Fist starts with a wicked bass intro before shifting gears with an up-tempo rock beat that sounds more like AC/DC crossed with Motorhead (not that I’m complaining).
The guitars roar with contempt as the drums lay the foundations for a quirky and energetic track that has few elements of blues – although you can just tell by the feel of the band’s playing that they have more than casual splatterings of the blues in their veins.
The chorus maintains the pace despite softening the vocals a touch, and then an amazing guitar solo carries you off to another sonic plain that gradually fades into nothingness, and then we’re done…
Uncle Watson’s Widow certainly know how to have fun and deliver in spades on Iron Fist.
Short, sharp and abrasive as hell, Iron Fist is a definite party starter.
