Aussie metal fans are excited about the fact that Skillet are finally returning to our shores after seven years away. During that seven years Skillet’s rise of popularity has gone to a whole new level. Albums such as Comatose and Awake drew a whole new fanbase to the US based group but their more recent albums Rise and Unleashed seems to create another new wave that even the band themselves cannot believe.
HEAVY Mag’s Dave Griffiths spoke to Skillet’s John Cooper about their new-found popularity and about their forthcoming Australian tour.
“It has been awhile and we had such an amazing tour in 2011 and we just loved it,” says Cooper when we broach the subject of the hiatus from Australia. “In fact when we do full band interviews and people say ‘so where is your favourite place to play’ my wife always says Australia because that particular tour was so good. I think it was all because of the excitement of the fans, I don’t think we realised how many fans we had there and just how excited they would be. It was so lovely. We just loved that tour and we have been wanting to come back ever since. There are just so many places to go to and at the end of every year we would be like ‘oh gosh we didn’t do Australia again… when are we going to do that?’ So it is good that we are finally doing it again.”
“You kind of know the songs that you have to play,” he says when we discuss putting together the set list for Australia. “I went and saw U2 play a couple of years ago and they played for two hours and they still didn’t play all of their hits…. they have too many. We don’t have that problem but we know that we have a handful of songs that we just have to play, but other than that I like to mix it up and play some new stuff and play some older stuff, even if they aren’t radio hits, because you have to get a sense of what fans want to hear. You want to surprise fans but we’ll never be that band that doesn’t end up playing the hit songs.”
