The Return Of DARK ANGEL

Share This:

Back in the early 1980s Dark Angel were an American metal band on the rise. Thrash metal was on the rise however the band called it a day in 1991. A legend had been born though with drummer Gene Hoglan becoming recognised as one of the best drummers in the genre and from there he went on to play with bands such as Testament, Strapping Young Lad and Fear Factory.

Now in 2019 Dark Angel are back together again and planning an Australian tour in September. HEAVY Mag sat down and chatted to Hoglan about how the reforming and the tour has come about.

“We are over the moon excited,” he says when we talk about the fact that this will be Dark Angel’s first trip to Australia. “All the guys in the band are super-stoked about being able to play in Australia. It will be the first time for the band but for me personally it will be like my twentieth time playing there. Australia is always so much fun to play, it is always a challenging tour from the travelling viewpoint, but the audiences, the crowds and all the fans make it so amazing to play Australia. I always enjoy it. One of the things I have always dug about coming to Australia, since the early 1990s, is how into extreme metal they are – that is one thing that is amazing about Australia – you like really hard fast and brutal. That is right up my alley.”

“It had been brewing and mentioned by my management for some time,” says Hoglan when the discussion turns to how this Dark Angel reunion came about. “It was mainly a schedule issue always. I remember in 2013 it was looking like 2014 might have some pretty open spaces in it to try and make some shows happen and then Dark Angel have been receiving offers every year about doing ‘return shows’ but this time we were actually able to take advantage of some of those offers. So it started off playing some shows, we started in Chile playing with Megadeth in a huge arena and I thought that was pretty funny, there was no small club gig to get everything ready, the first show was in front of twenty thousand people in some big ol’ arena in Chile. Just throw yourself right in the fire, men!”
