The Dillinger Escape Plan – One Of Us Is The Killer (Party Smasher, Inc.)

Share This:

I don’t think the world was ever quite ready for The Dillinger Escape Plan. They came out swinging with a genre of music that was still new to the ears of many. Termed ‘Mathcore’ one can say that The Dillinger Escape Plan play up to the term with perfection, smashing through a barrage of abstract time changes and unorthodox song structures.

From the headbashing opening of Prancer, the technical proficiency of The DEP’s playing will leave most guitar heroes in sheer amazement. Title track, One Of Us Is The Killer shows the band at their most radio friendly, treading through heavy riffs as vocalist Greg Puciato sings with his trademark whine and falsetto as opposed to his deathly screams and hardcore growls. Punishing tunes like Hero Of The Soviet Union and Magic That I Held You Prisoner are the keys to a much welcomed headache as they don’t hold back in their extreme delivery, attacking all realms of your consciousness without warning.

There’s just something quite unique and special about The DEP that separates them apart from the rest of the bands that sit within the technical ‘mathcore’ genre. They’re not for everyone but to those that follow the band or anyone who is looking for something with a little extra spice, One Of Us Is The Killer is an unrelenting record of power and intensity that sits nicely within The DEP’s catalogue of quirky that you need to own. Fingers crossed they bring their high energy stage show back to Australia very soon in what will most definitely be one of the more chaotic live shows one will experience.
