Interview by Ali Williams
If you call yourself a true-blue supporter of the Australian heavy music landscape, then the name Segression shouldn’t just ring a bell—it should trigger absolute, unadulterated audio warfare in your eardrums.
For three decades, these Wollongong legends have stood as one of the country’s most relentless and enduring metal forces, a band forged in fire and built on pure, unfiltered groove and aggression. They’ve shared massive stages with the likes of Slipknot, Pantera, and Ozzy Osbourne, cementing their reputation as a premier live assault unit that never compromises. After scoring a stellar No. 2 spot on the iTunes metal charts with their recently dropped retrospective, The Best of Segression, the boys proved that their focused brand of sonic artillery is sharper and heavier than ever before.
Now, the cosmic alignments of the heavy underground have summoned these titans back from the void for something truly monumental. This Saturday, August 22, the legendary Mansfield Tavern in Brisbane is set to transform into a sacred ground of absolute chaos for the third annual Necrosonic Festival. The line-up is an absolute monster, featuring international tech-death visionaries Rivers of Nihil alongside homegrown elite like Psycroptic, Gravemind, and a resurrected The Berzerker. But right at the absolute heart of this 12-hour, 30-band auditory bloodbath is an exclusive, highly anticipated 30-year milestone reunion set from Segression. The altar has spoken, and the message is clear: if you aren’t in the pit for this rare, fleeting return to the stage, you’re missing out on a certified piece of Australian heavy music history.
Ahead of what promises to be an unhinged, sweat-soaked day of brutal riffage and flying bodies, HEAVY caught up with the band to see how the camp is holding up before descending upon Brisbane. We threw down the ultimate festival challenge, dug into their blueprint for surviving a massive marathon day of metal, and got the lowdown on which classic tracks are going to absolutely level the main room. Grab a cold one, lace up your most reliable pit shoes, and find out exactly what happens when one of Australia’s hardest-hitting bands prepares to reclaim the throne.
