As a German myself, it is always a good feeling to see extreme metal from the local underground gaining more international attention. With Longing Voracity, Teratoma deliver their second full length album and prove that the German death metal scene is still capable of producing records that feel raw, oppressive, and uncompromising. Released via Me Saco Un Ojo Records, this album dives deep into old school death metal territory while maintaining a dark and atmospheric identity of its own.
The short opener Exordium sets the tone immediately. Dark atmospherics slowly build tension before the album fully descends into its murky and crushing soundscape. As soon as the title track Longing Voracity kicks in, Teratoma unleash thick and filthy guitar riffs, supported by punchy bass lines and tight, organic drumming. The production feels raw but controlled, giving the music enough space to breathe while still delivering the necessary heaviness that death metal demands.
With Chaotic Bewilderment and Ravaged and Absorbed, the band show their strength in mid tempo song writing. Instead of relying purely on speed, Teratoma focus on heavy grooves and crawling riffs that slowly dig into your head. The snarling vocals cut through the dense instrumentation and add a layer of brutality that perfectly fits the oppressive atmosphere. Ravaged and Absorbed especially stands out with its shifting rhythms and relentless drive, keeping the listener constantly on edge.
Perpetual Anguish and Circle of Perdition continue the descent into darkness, combining eerie atmospheric passages with crushing riff work. There is a constant sense of decay running through these tracks, as if the music itself is slowly collapsing under its own weight. The band manage to keep the songs memorable by balancing groove and aggression, which prevents the album from becoming monotonous despite its dense and heavy sound.
The instrumental interlude Interim offers a brief moment to breathe before the album dives back into the abyss with Festering Realm. Here, Teratoma lean heavily into their old school influences, delivering a slow and punishing track that feels almost suffocating in its atmosphere. Spewing Atrocities follows with a more aggressive approach, pushing the tempo slightly while maintaining the same level of brutality and sonic weight.
Closing track Stertorous Whisper brings the album to a fitting end. Dark, crawling riffs and oppressive atmospherics create a final descent into decay, leaving the listener with a lingering sense of heaviness and unease. It feels like the natural conclusion of a record that was never meant to offer comfort but instead aims to drag the listener deeper into its rotten and suffocating world.
With Longing Voracity, Teratoma deliver a crushing and uncompromising death metal album that builds strongly on their debut and firmly establishes their place within the underground scene. The combination of old school riffing, oppressive atmosphere, and carefully crafted mid tempo grooves gives the record a distinctive and coherent identity.
The album thrives on its raw energy and dark mood, offering a listening experience that feels both brutal and immersive. Teratoma manage to create a sound that is deeply rooted in classic death metal while still feeling fresh and relevant within the modern extreme metal landscape. For fans of filthy riffs, crushing grooves, and suffocating atmospheres, this is a record that should not be overlooked.
A dense and relentless slab of death metal that delivers exactly what it promises and leaves behind a lasting impression of decay, heaviness, and controlled brutality.
