Grammy award winning rock band Switchfoot return with their brand new album Native Tongue on the 18th January… an album that has become eagerly anticipated due to the lay-off the band had after the release of their last album.
With the first singles off the album hinting at the band trying new things this time around HEAVY Mag recently sat down with Drew Shirley to find out exactly what fans can expect from Native Tongue.
“A lot went into this album,” says Shirley when we begin to talk about the beautiful sound that you experience while listening to it. “It is our eleventh album and we started the album by taking a break from the road. That was something we needed to do so badly because we have been touring for like fifteen years, almost without any long breaks. So we decided that 2018 would be a hiatus year where we wouldn’t tour. So it started like that then eventually Jon came into the studio and then Tim and then we started meeting up at the studio and to be honest we were testing the waters – we were asking do we still want to do this, do we have the creativity, do we have the drive? Being away from our families, we wondering if we could still do that. Our families come first and we have always said that, and I know that is not the rock ‘n’ roll thing to say but if we don’t have our families then we have blown it.”
“So from there we just started recording these songs,” Shirley continues. “We found this new energy, and vigour, and excitement. Then we enlisted some friends of ours from OneRepublic, then we got a local producer on board and we sat down and finished this album up. Now we are so excited about these songs, in a way that we have never been before. And here we are with this album!”
Native Tongue will be out on the 18th January through Spinefarm Records and you can pre-order the album here https://itunes.apple.com/au/album/native-tongue/1438581855
