SUM 41 ‘Order In Decline’

Share This:

Remember back when punk bands made statements about the world around them? In recent years many bands have stopped that – a few though have kept the legacy going. One such band is Canadians Sum 41. Take just one listen to their brand new album Order In Decline and you can tell that this is not only a band angry at the world that we live in, but a band that also still knows how to write from the heart… and that is not something that every band these days knows how to do.

The album starts off slowly. Opening track ‘Turning Away’ has a strong electronic opening with smooth vocals from Deryck Whibley. That all changes though as the band hits full stride for the chorus – and that is the first inclining that this is going to be one of the heaviest albums that Sum 41 have recorded to date.

‘Out For Blood’ sees Sum 41 capture their traditional catchiness while at the same time delivering important lyrics about the state of the world that we live in today. That same topic is explored in one of the heavier tracks on the album – ‘The New Sensation’ – which declares “. ‘The confrontation against this nation, the new sensation, so who is to blame” leaving no doubt who the song has been written about.

Sum 41’s brutal side remains for ‘A Death In The Family’ another protest song that contains the lyrics “your lies are tearing us apart” while those in the need for a good angry song need not look any further than ‘Heads Will Roll’ which will have you singing the lyrics “you don’t want me lose my shit because heads will roll” over and over. It is seriously up there with Limp Bizkit’s ‘Break Stuff’ as the perfect angry song.

The album then shows its two sides together with the fast-paced ’45 (A Matter Of Time’ followed by the slowed down and heartfelt ‘Never There.’ When you know that the latter was written by Deryck Whibley about the father that he has never met and it will bring tears to your eyes every time you listen to it.

The pretty harsh ‘Eat You Alive’ is again catchy and allows the guitars of Dave Baksh and Tom Thacker to shine through. Perhaps the best track on the album is ‘The People Vs…’ which is a call to arms with lyrics like “I know a bad man when I see his face, to end this misery he’s got to go.” This brilliant album then closes with another heartfelt track – ‘Catching Fire’ – another song about loss.

Order In Decline is a work of song-writing brilliance. If you are angry about the world we live in today then this is the album for you. Sum 41 stand up and say what needs to be said with an album that goes through a number of emotions. A stunning album that you feel is going to be listened to for generations to come.
