Words and Pix by Rashid AlKamraikhi

Orange County hardcore band Stick To Your Guns is in town to throw down hard on a Wednesday night at The Triffid and School night or not, the kids are out to throw down with them.

As I enter the venue, the night’s openers Wetwork are already up on stage and racking up a body count. Their menacing frontman stalks the stage as the band blasts out uncompromising deathcore riffs. It’s my first time seeing this band, but I’ve got a feeling that it won’t be the last.

Wildheart front up next with their slick hardcore tunes. Vocalist Axl also cuts a foreboding shape, and the proximity of the date of this show to a day of national contention only serves to amp up the hostility of his delivery. Always was, always will be.

I had heard good things about SeeYouSpaceCowboy but hadn’t given them any time before. That immediately changed after seeing them. The intensity of their performance blew me away, from the harsh delivery of the vocals to the pure chaos of the music. I’ve since been working my way through their back catalogue in an attempt to make up for lost time.

As A-Ha’s Take On Me fades, Stick To Your Guns take to the stage and the whole venue erupts. The band are here celebrating the anniversary of their album Diamond, and they get straight into slamming every track from it right into the audience’s faces.

Those who aren’t flailing away wildly are singing along to every word, and STYG is loving every second of it. It’s this kind of appreciation between fans and artists that sees them returning to Australia as often as they can, and there will be more than a few of us counting down the days until next time
