After leaving the band he founded and made his name with in 2018, Jeff Hatrix found himself somewhat in musical limbo.
Despite performing in several other bands over the years – including White Heat and Purgatory – Hatrix will always be better known as the frontman for heavy metal band and musical pioneers, Mushroomhead, a position he held for nearly 25 years.
After flirting with solo project Nothing in 2011 and releasing The New Psychodalia, Hatrix returned to the project earlier this year with the release of EP Doom Candy, a collection of songs that has its foundations in the music for which he made his name for but also unleashed a side of his musical psyche that perhaps could not have been visited within the confines of an established band.
With the release of lead single “Never Enough” recently, Hatrix sat down with HEAVY to chat about all things musical – past, present and future.
“I think there’s a lot of people that can have situations where they feel like they are trying their hardest and no matter what they do or what they contribute in life it never seems enough”, he explained of the track. “This song is about rising above that feeling and making the most out of your life no matter what you do”.
In the full interview, Jeff talks more about Nothing and why he chose to continue the project with this name, the lyric video that goes with “Never Enough” and the benefits of it, writing relatable lyrics, his time in Mushroomhead and what his early vision was for the band, acting and the parallels it has with music, the possibility of an Australian tour in the future and more.
