Do you like your music heavy and hitting you like a sledgehammer in the face? If you answered yes then it is time for you to discover Newcastle outfit Liberties and their brand new Broken EP. There is certainly nothing soft or placid about this EP, no it is pure brutality and we all like a little bit of that don’t we?
Opening track ‘The Cutting Floor’ doesn’t mess around. It reaches out of your speakers, hits you with all the furiousity of a king-hit and then goes about its merry way being driven by the brutal vocals of front-man Ciaran. The wall of sound delivered by Liberties is a rarity these days.
The vocals are also a stand-out on ‘Are You Ok’ which is also driven by some wild guitar playing that is going to have all the musicians out their talking once they hear it. Liberties’ awesomeness continues with the abrupt ‘524’ while the pounding drums of ‘Crooked States’ is a testament to the musicianship of this band that deserves to be noticed. Again the guitars do their own thing showing a maturity in the band where each musco is given free license to do what they feel sounds best. Closing track ‘Broken’ then mixes pure aggression with manic wails while the guitar playing seems to go to another level yet again.
When the closing strains of Broken are still ringing in your ears one thing goes through your mind – ‘yes Liberties’ certainly has it. This my friends is the brutal future of Australia.
