With the Sydney Guitar Festival now less then a month away serious guitarists across the country are now counting down the days until some of the best axe players in the world congregate and create some amped magic that will have to be seen to be believed. While award winning guitarists like Tommy Emmanuel and Albert Lee will draw some big crowds visitors to the show might want to check out Kaki King’s ground-breaking visual set titled – The Neck Is The Bridge To The Body.
King is a Grammy-nominated guitarist who made Rolling Stones’ ‘New Guitar Gods’ list while she has mixed genres on the way to recording six albums and two EPs. Now with King bringing her amazing new show to the Festival HEAVY Mag sat down with her to find out what we expect from her epic set.
“So my show is called The Neck Is The Bridge To The Body and it is an audio and visual show,” says King. “The whole show hinges around this projection lit guitar. There is a white guitar that these before I even enter the stage and we send light from a projector only onto the guitar, so any image that you see is only hits the guitar. There is another video behind me and then I am in the middle of these two places of great visual interest and at the same time I am playing the soundtrack to the movie that you are watching on the instrument that I am playing. There are many, many levels of things to witness in the show.”
King then goes to explain how it all works. “A lot of the key parts of the show involve the guitar being audio reactive, so the video is audio reactive, so if I play a note then the clip changes, i control the clips through the guitar that I am playing physically. To me that is extraordinary… it is so much fun to do. And the show is never the same show twice and it really is a fun time… and you know what it is still me giving my best on the guitar.
The Sydney Guitar Festival is on from the 9-19th August
