IDLE RUIN Display Raw Aggression

Out of all of the recent turmoil in the music industry due to obvious reasons, there has also been the occasional flash of bright light with new bands coming to light or existing ones getting more time to hone their craft.

One such band to rise from the ashes is Idle Ruin, an aggressive and confronting metal outfit combining death and thrash metal together to form an uneasy alliance that hits the mark.

With the recent release of their self titled EP, vocalist and drummer Liam Anthony sat down with HEAVY to fill us in on the band’s progress.

“My background is primarily in a lot of thrash metal and traditional metal,” he explained, “and I used to play drums for an Australian thrash band called Malakyte. We had an album in 2013 and did some tours and it was all going well until it wasn’t (laughs). I’ve always been into that kind of music but more leaning towards the more heavier, raw side of it, the borderline death metal stuff – that really sweet spot in the late ’80s where thrash was evolving into death metal with Possessed and Kreator and that Teutonic stuff. When I decided to start Idle Ruin I didn’t want it to be a continuation of my last band Malakyte. I thought I love this music but I want it to be more experiential and visceral so when I was writing the music it was a case of will this get the fists pumping? Will it get the pit going? That kind of stuff and I love that kind of music more than any other genre with the shout back choruses and the fist pump and riffs, that kind of stuff. Stylistically it’s thrash, its death metal, I’ve heard people call it blackened thrash but I’m going more for that experiential element first and foremost.”

In the full interview, Liam discusses the music in further detail, being vocalist and drummer and the challenges that poses, having all band members contribute vocals to the music, the story behind the EP cover, future plans and more.
