GROOVER Review: PEYTON PARRISH ‘Poetry Glass’

Share This:

Peyton Parrish don’t feel the need to tell me anything about their new track Poetry Glass except for the fact it is metal/rock/punk, which on this occasion is good enough.

Starting with a gradual and light sonic structure, it doesn’t take long for the guitars to kick in and introduce some pretty impressive rock vocals that ooze confidence.

There’s a brief, yet cool as fuck harsh vocal accompaniment in short bursts that sounds promising, but, for now, at least, it acts more as a surprise weapon rather than an intrusive visitor.

It’s definitely a radio-friendly track with enough edge to make it appealing to those who like their music on the harder side of things.

The harsh vocals continue to appear in bursts, almost sounding like the angry voice of reason. It’s a nice touch without being overdone, which makes a welcome change.

You can sense Peyton Parrish are playing within themselves at times, with the angry caged monster just waiting to be set free, and it adds a sense of unexpected tension simmering below the accessible exterior.

Just after the 2.30 mark the guitars are set to reverb and a haunting calm descends over the song, threatening a violent outburst, but the band resists the temptation for a massive breakdown, in the process going against the modern musical grain and showing more than glimpses of originality.

As the song fades out with more reverb, there’s almost a sense of unfinished business, which can only bode well for future listens.
