Reading through the blurb, rap metal/hip-hop outfit MVFL you can tell the band is pissed off.
Pissed off by people not giving them a chance, pissed off at the music industry in general, and pissed off just because they feel like being pissed off.
Which is good enough for me as I sit down to take a listen to their single The Itch.
It starts off more on the rap side of things with subtle samples before MVFL find their inner anger with a barking, rapid-fire delivery that drips with venomous intent. This only magnifies as the track progresses with clever use of vocal techniques, slowing then speeding the track up in quick and timely succession.
It’s definitely more on the harder end of the sonic spectrum, with angst-drenched vocals coexisting with an almost nu-metal sensibility that works well.
There isn’t much time to slow down or catch your breath here – and why would you want to when the sonic blows keep coming?
A tasty breakdown leading into yet another vocal style comes in around the 2.40 mark before the chaotic rumblings once more take ascendency amid a barrage of up-tempo drums that gives added impetus.
The unexpected but impactful sounds of keys fade in towards the track’s end, easing to conclusion, where many bands would have maintained the rage to the final note. It is an interesting and poignant way to end the song and shows the scope and lateral thinking MVFL put into their music.
