It is an exciting time for Aussie prog-powerhouse Circles. Not only do they have a brand new album, titled The Last One (no don’t panic it is not their last album) coming out on August 31st but the band are about to tour Australia with Tesseract before then embarking on a European tour with Caligula’s Horse which will see them do a plethora of dates including playing at esteemed festivals like Euroblast and ProgPower.
HEAVY Mag recently caught up with Dave Hunter from Circles to find out how they are going to cope with all this touring and what fans can expect to hear on The Last One.
“It was quiet for quite a while,” says Hunter while talking about the epic adventures the band are about to embark on. “We were kinda just knee deep in recording and obviously making this thing so it is great to be able to finally share it. It is going to get out there and it is really good. It is quite different from our previous releases and that was kind of intentionally because we wanted to move more raw and honest sort of direction. I’ve been framing this up as just a really honest album for Circles. We didn’t write this in mind for any specific audience or anything like that, we just wrote it for ourselves and that is where we wanted it to be, so yeah we do have some classic circles in there, but it is a different vibe and we are excited for people to hear it.”
So does it worry the band how their fans will accept the change to their sound? “Yes and no,” says Hunter. “Where there are lost fans there will be new fans I suppose. Like I said though it is not really something that is going to bother us either way because we are not writing it for people. I mean if people enjoy it then that is a bonus but aside from that we are really proud of it, especially when we came back from some of the European tours we did a couple of years ago and touring with some of these other bands, and seeing these bands in a different light it kind of changed how we approached our own music and our writing and stuff. Especially touring with a band like Dillinger Escape Plan across Europe that just really opened our eyes to honest music and performance and not being so robotic and not getting into a certain scene. That was really enjoyable to write and make that discovery… and yeah we are super proud.”
