Film Review: Teen Titans Go! To The Movies

Share This:

Hold the presses everybody because one of the films of the year is coming from a really weird place. You’ve probably all seen the trailers for Teen Titans Go: To The Movies by now, but unless you are a hardcore Teen Titans Go fan you probably aren’t planning on going to see the movie. Well I’m here to tell you that if you are fan of DC or Marvel Comics movies then you have to go and see this… because this has ended up being one of the funniest films of the year.

Robin (Scott Menville – Spider-Man, The Campus) has had enough. He and the other Teen Titans, Raven (Tara Strong – Batman: The Killing Joke, The Powerpuff Girls), Beast Boy (Greg Cipes – Fast & Furious, Club Dread), Starfire (Hynden Welch – Adventure Time, Groundhog Day) and Cyborg (Khary Payton – The Walking Dead, Astronaut: The Last Push) have had enough. They are constantly fighting crime and winning but then have to sit back and watch as the likes of Superman (Nicolas Cage – The Rock, Leaving Las Vegas) and Batman (Jimmy Kimmel – The Boss Baby, Ted 2) all get movies while they get nothing.

Fed up with it all the Teen Titans first of all get themselves an arch nemesis  in the form of Slade (Will Arnett – The Lego Movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and then seek a Hollywood director, Jade Wilson (Kristen Bell – Frozen, Veronica Mars), who they can pitch their movie idea to, and if that doesn’t work then they are prepared to make sure the other superheroes never existed.

The film doesn’t sound like it would much and to be honest the trailer looks kind of childish but just like all DC animations it delivers in the payloads. And in fact it may well be one of the funniest movies of the year. Will the film is centred towards children there are enough fan moments in the film for it to also work for teenagers and even adults.  While there is an easy to follow storyline for the kiddies the screenwriters Michael Jelenic (Ben 10, Legion Of Superheroes) and Aaron Horvath (Critters, Naruto) make sure there are enough comic book movie references to keep older audiences happy as well. Yes the regular DC characters all get referenced but also look out for some Marvel references as well with Deadpool being mentioned and even Stan Lee popping up.

And while the manic style brought to the film by directors Horvath and Peter Rida Michail (Teen Titans Go!) makes the film look like a mix of Family Guy meets The Powerpuff Girls what keeps this film going is the humour provided by the screenplay, and with that humour nothing is immune. From DC flop movies like Green Lantern through to poor Shia La Beouf everything cops a serve here and it will have any comic book movie laughing from start to finish. Yes in a time when so many comedies just aren’t funny it takes a film like Teen Titans Go! To The Movies to challenge for the title of funniest film of the year.

For a long time now I have been saying that while Marvel are winning the live action comic book movie war DC is winning the animated film war and this film just shows that even more. While Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is completely crazy it works on many levels. The storyline keeps you entertained, you are constantly waiting to see what voice actor or reference pops up next and the film is literally a laugh a minute. You might think I am a lunatic for saying but this is one of the funniest films of the year and you are doing yourself a severe disservice by not seeing it if you are a comic book fan.
