New Zealand rockers Electric Universe released the first track off their upcoming album Timeless late last month with the single “Time”, a hard-rocking number that was the perfect introduction to the band on a global scale.
Guitarist Mutt sat down with HEAVY to run us through the first single ahead of today’s release of “Right On Time”, with a number of other tunes scheduled to drop almost monthly until the May release of Timeless.
“We formed in about 2017,” Mutt explained, “and its basically some old friends of mine who have played together off and on since the ”80s. We’ve got a new drummer recently and we had a keyboardist join about six months ago and we had a rhythm guitarist that’s been with us for a couple of years. It basically revolves around some old friends.”
With a sound deeply entrenched in classic bands like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, Mutt openly declares that the old school ethos of music runs deep in the veins of Electric Universe.
“I listen to a lot of the newer stuff too but my roots are there in the classic music like Deep Purple and Gary Moore,” he agreed. “I write most of the riffs for the songs so it lends itself to my influences. As a band we’re pretty guitar-driven. I love the organ sounds as well so we had to have that in there with the two guitars.”
In the full interview Mutt runs us through Timeless and the musical direction of the album, talks about the old school vibe and mentality of the band, his past bands including playing with Phil Rudd, signing with MR Records and more.
