Following the success of their debut single Lifeless in August, rising Brisbane hardcore outfit Tetrament have today released the follow-up, Depths.
Depths is different sonically to Lifeless in that it isn’t flat-out aggressive but still packs a hefty punch. It is a more personal song for vocalist Matty and further illustrates the musical composition of the band.
Tetrament have also revealed their debut EP The Path Of Least Existence will be released on December 8, so HEAVY thought it was long overdue that we caught up with the boys for another chat.
“It originally started with the lyrics,” Matt started when asked how Depths came together. “I was watching a TV show on a Saudi Arabian dictator, and I was thinking about it and the line ‘we are defined by our torment’ – which is the opening line of the song – came about out of that, just thinking about how this guy’s life had shaped him and how that is the case for everyone. Your experiences shape who you are down the track. The rest of the song came when I did my first stint in rehab. I’ve dealt with a lot of substance abuse issues through my life and a lot of mental health shit, so the rest of the song came out on my first attempt at sorting my life out. It’s a pretty bare-bones kind of song.”
In the full interview, Matty and Sammy (guitar) talk more about Depths, its awesome film clip, how it differs musically to Lifeless, the upcoming EP and its musical direction, their bid to win a slot at Good Things Festival, the EP launch party and more.
