The wait is finally over for Papa Roach fans as their brand new album – Who Do You Trust? has hit stores. The wait was agonising – not because of the length of time between it and Crooked Teeth but because the tracks released before the album hit stands seemed to suggest that there the band had gone through a sound change.
HEAVY Mag recently chatted to Papa Roach’s Jerry Horton to see what inspired the change in sound and also how the band went about putting together Who Do You Trust?
“We have a history of writing about our lives and our struggles,” says Horton talking about what inspired the band with the album. “This one though was a little more looking outward and not to do about life struggles. This was more about things that we’ve heard and more about things that people can relate to – there is one song called Feels Like Home which is about growing up and leaving your home to go and start your new life and then you come back and everything is different, it doesn’t feel the way it did when you were growing up. It is kind of all over the place, there was no real vision or direction of subject matter, it was just ‘oh cool, let’s write about that.’”
“We’ve been constantly evolving and we even changed our sound after our first album,” says Horton reflecting on the comments about their change of sound with this album. “That has been the one thing that has always been constant with us. We got together with a couple of guys to write one song and we loved it so much that we asked them to help us with the whole album. We had so much fun and we were so happy with the outcome that we just wanted to do it again. We just liked the style of production, they kind of had the same ideas of what elements made the band us and also what new elements could be brought in. On the last record we got back to our roots in terms of songwriting but we had a modern sound and modern production, this time it was about capturing our influences and merging those sounds into our sound and ingesting our sound into those sounds so the sounds are melted together. So it kind of feels like a playlist of the kind of stuff that we would listen to.”
