BRING ME THE HORIZON Take The Brave Big Step

A new Bring Me The Horizon single dropped this week and it sent social media into a freefall. “Their sound, what has happened to their sound?” seemed to be the question that was most asked. Well people can speculate all they like but the only way to find out what exactly was inspiring the band when they sat down to work on their brand new album amo (out on the 11th January) is to talk to the band themselves. HEAVY Mag recently chatted to Matt Nicholls and he was very open about the direction that the band is heading in.

“I think with this album we didn’t really sit down and make a conscious decision to create an album full of bangers,” he says the thoughtfulness clear in his voice. “In the past I think we’ve got into albums wanting to make an album full of singles but I think this time we went in and just did what we wanted to do. Yeah we took some different directions but really this was just about what we wanted to make opposed to what we thought people would want to hear if that makes sense. I guess you could say we just made a more conscious decision to experiment a little bit more.”

“The electronic thing has always been there with the band,” he says when we talk about the more electronic edge that is obvious when you sit down and listen to amo. “We’ve always kind of made music with an electronic influence because we are huge fans of that kind of music. But really we didn’t want to limit ourselves, I mean there is only so far you can take guitar, drums and bass so we’ve just opened up this whole new world of what we can do with our music. We don’t have to be just a rock band we can have other sounds, you can have whatever sound you want, whether it be orchestral strings or dance synths… whatever you want. For us we love that kind of stuff and we just didn’t want to limit ourselves and be like ‘this is our sound and this is what we are going to be’. So many bands find their comfort zone and they find their sound and then they seem to be scared to take that leap into something different. Well we aren’t scared to do that, we have enough confidence to do something like that and I think really that is it, it is just us being confident and being brave enough to take that risk and make something that sounds a little different I guess.”
