Aussie band Born Lion are making waves across the music industry at the moment. In 2015 their Final Words album shocked everybody with its brilliance and even go the band an ARIA nomination for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album. Now the Sydney-based band are back with a brand new album called Celebrate The Lie and HEAVY Mag caught up with John Bowker to chat about what fans can expect this time around.
“We actually started writing about part way through 2016,” says John as we talk about how long the band has been working on this album. “We parted ways with our original drummer, Dave, and we got a new guy in and that time we just kind of bunkered down and spent six months just working around the clock sort of and then pumped the most about of energy we have ever put into writing music and considering that we all work and have families and what not it was a significant amount of time that we put towards making this and then when we had worked out about thirteen songs we went up to a studio and lived in the studio for a couple of weeks – we even had a bunk bed situation going on. We just stayed there and tracked for two weeks solid. Yeah it was pretty cool and also quite tiring.”
John also says that the band ‘experimented’ a little bit when they were recording this time as well. “We played around with our sound a little bit,” he explains. “We were trying out some different instruments and the studio had a lot of gear so we had a bit of a kids in the candy shop situation really. There was just a shitload of pedals, guitars and amps, we were playing around the pedals and seeing what we happen and such things. The album ended up being a bit of a patchwork because we lost count of how many shit things we were using… there is just a whole bunch of gear used throughout that album. That is very different to our first album because that was all pretty much the same guitar and amp with very minimal effects… so yeah it is different in that sense.”
