If there’s one thing better than going to a metal festival, it’s chatting with the bands backstage before, during, or after their set. Backstage is where the magic happens, and it’s also where bands can be at their most vulnerable – and exciting…
HEAVY has just finished doing the rounds at Dead Of Winter Festival at the Mansfield Tavern, and one of the bands we caught up with was Flangipanis.
FLANGIPANIS is a fiercely independent four-piece pop-punk outfit formed in Brisbane in 2008. Fronted by vocalist Jodie Lawlor alongside guitarist Josh Murphy, the group has become a local legend in the underground punk scene. They are renowned for their chaotic, high-energy live shows and raw, infectious anthems packed with unapologetic, crude humour.
Their discography features relentless studio albums like Cover Your Ears, Always the Bridesmaid, and Fuckin’ Woo. Known for addressing rowdy party culture and relatable daily struggles, they frequently topped Brisbane’s 4ZZZ Hot 100 radio chart. Following an 18-year run, the band announced they will officially disband in late 2026, wrapping up with a massive final celebratory tour.
Ali Williams caught up with the band.
