[ALBUM REVIEW] Midnight – Shox of Violence

Share This:

Sleazy aggressive blasphemous metal punk, one simple way of describing Cleveland, Ohio band Midnight which is a one band featuring Athenar who play all instruments & vocals starting out in 2003 while he was still in Boulder.

The first time I heard the song Satanic Royalty off the 2011 album of the same name it drew me in immediately. Once I got my hands on that album, I was hooked on all things Midnight, with the riffs, the lyrics, the imagery of a hooded band and just like a junkie I need my next fix which came in the form of the 2014 album No Mercy For Mayhem. Upon first hearing about this new release, I was giddy with anticipation. Shox of Violence is a four song e.p. which if you are a Midnight fan, you will be extremely pleased, especially with the opening track, Death Scream with Athenar’s primal scream at the start & continuing with his most pissed off sounding vocal performance put on to tape (in my opinion).

The songs on here are brutal and full of aggression which can be heard on Who Gives A Fuck? , the song title alone gives you an insight of what to expect. Listening to the song Ready For Destruction, it’s hard not to get caught up in the mood and break some shit. This e.p. is full of riffs and solos that will melt your face off, there’s no holding back. The bass thunders along with the galloping drums that pummels you at breakneck speed. The music as a whole is right in your face, and there is no stopping the force it delivers. Of course, you can’t have a Midnight release without the over the top sleaze element which is prevalent on the track Groin Gripper. The lyrics are something to behold.

Even though Shox of Violence only features 4 new songs on the e.p. don’t let that deter you as the cd version comes with a slew of extras ranging from covers from the likes of Venom (In League With Satan / Too Loud For The Crowd), Quiet Riot (Slick Black Cadillac), Australia’s very own Taipan doing Breakout, Pagans & The Spits, a couple of live tracks plus more. One thing is for certain; you will have blood dripping from your ear after listening to this scorching release.
