Album Review: BISON “Perfect Mistakes”

I’ve heard a lot of rumours that nu-metal is back and in vogue, but haven’t really had the opportunity to bear witness to this until now.

Melbourne’s Bison are definitely part of the new wave of nu-metal.

Go back four years, and this was the most shunned genre in hard-hitting music. Those who grew up with it finally kicked the nostalgia bug, and the kids deemed it cool to embrace. Ahhhh trends.

Don’t you just love them?

The white guy rapping is very on the beat in the style of Fred Durst or Mike Shinoda, over the top of epic sounding big beat riffery that seems legit, and hits the ear rather nicely.

Not as reliant on the D.J. effects on guitar that 90’s nu-metal offered, Bison seem content with the big power chord energy that ensures the band will get in your face right up to the catchy chorus,
that will get right in your ear, then your brain. Pretty good stuff. Lots of bottom end implying the side chain compressors are working overtime. The songs as a collective have colluded in that modern short song format giving the whole e.p a very urgent feel with little to no filler. In and out so speak.

Track four, “A Million Miles” chills out for a bit and then comes back in with a big finish that leaves me uninspired to be honest. The more I listen to this album, the more it kind of bores me.

Maybe I’m too old for this, but it’s not pushing the genre I grew up with enough to consider it a ‘new wave’.
