Get ready to unleash the fury as Dark Down South III returns to Kirup this November 21 and 22, bringing two days of relentless metal mayhem to Western Australia’s South West. From Friday through Saturday, Jim McDonald Oval will once again transform into a haven for metalheads, showcasing a lineup that cuts across the full spectrum of heavy music. Headlining this year’s festival is a crushing lineup of extreme acts, featuring Mexico City’s unrelenting force Demente, the blistering grind chaos of Melbourne’s Nembutolik, the oppressive weight of Iniquitous Monolith, scene veterans Infected, and the raw, unfiltered energy of Melbourne’s Kunt Squad.
Backing them is a stacked undercard of Western Australia’s underground, including Psychonaut, DeadCode, Vanadium B.C., Oceans & Omens, Enforce, and Psytopia, alongside interstate chaos merchants like Adelaide’s Greedy Bunch of Parasites. Rounding out the lineup is a wave of emerging acts in Terror Adaptors, FistDead, Valmara, Undeniable, and Deathcap Dinner Party, each bringing their own flavour of noise, grit, and violence to the stage. Dark Down South III isn’t just about the music; it’s an immersive experience. With free camping, a BYO policy (no glass), and on-site food vendors, the festival delivers a full weekend escape built around community, volume, and connection. Designed as a family-friendly, all-ages event, it remains a rare space where generations of heavy music fans collide under one roof—or sky.
HEAVY sent out a list of questions to each band so we know what to expect before they set the stage on fire (not literally!), with TERROR ADAPTORS taking the bait today. But first, get to know the band a bit better…
The Terror Adaptors are one of the most delightfully unhinged, genre-bending outfits to ever storm out of the Perth live music scene. They initially kicked off back in 2007 as a studio-bound industrial hard-rock and synth project. After a brief hiatus, mastermind and resident sci-fi nerd Adrian Tolman brought the beast back to life. They evolved from an acoustic duo into a full-throttle, stage-dominating live juggernaut.
What makes this band an absolute must-see is their complete refusal to play by the rules. They’ve smashed through industrial rock, indie, and acoustic styles before locking into their current weapon of choice: a massive hard rock sound loaded with progressive and metal influences. Backed by soaring harmonies and crushing guitar tones, they write songs inspired by 1950s cinema, horror tropes, and alien girlfriends.
With heavy-hitting tracks like John Carpenter‘s The Thing and a reputation for chaotic live energy, they are gearing up to tear the house down at the upcoming Dark Down South Open Air Metal Festival. If you love your rock heavy, theatrical, and delivered with a tongue-in-cheek attitude, be sure to check out the Terror Adaptors.
TERROR ADAPTORS Q&A
HEAVY: DARK DOWN SOUTH OPEN AIR celebrates its third year as the only open air metal festival in WA this November. How excited were you to get the call up?
TA: We’ve been itching to go to this since they started the first one.
HEAVY: How important are festivals like this to the Australian music scene?
TA: Vital! With the closure of several music venues around Perth and all the other challenges musicians face day-to-day, it’s great to have festivals where bands can showcase their music to enthusiastic audiences, meet other bands and generally make a ridiculous amount of noise together.
HEAVY: Have you ever been to DDS as a punter or playing?
TA: I (Adrian) haven’t, because for me it’s hard to get to gigs unless I’m playing them. But Jax, our drummer, has — maybe even a couple of times. He actually played there last time with Rawkus!
HEAVY: If so, best memories of the day, or if not, what are you most excited for? .
TA: I’m dead excited for the opportunity to play on the first day and then get to kick back to watch all the other bands perform for the rest of the weekend. All our friends are coming and there’s going to be plenty of time for shenanigans.
HEAVY: It’s a long day of music. What will you be doing to make sure you will still be standing come your set time?
TA: Well, luckily (and you probably won’t hear a lot of bands say this), we’re on pretty early – so we’re gonna play our arses off and then spend the rest of the time partying. For the other bands, I would suggest pacing yourself. No one’s going to fault you for having a nap before you play either!
HEAVY: Give me your Top 3 Festival survival tips.
TA: – Hydrate — drink the other stuff that’s not alcohol.
– Protection — sunscreen, hat, condom, etc.
– Rest if you need to; whenever, wherever you can. Just not in my car. That’s where I sleep!
HEAVY: Which band – other than yourself – do you think will get up to the most mischief on the day?
TA: We know a lot of the local bands playing, so that’s going to involve a lot of goofing about, but we won’t name and shame! Unless there’s a particularly good photo opportunity!
HEAVY: Run us through your typical live show and what punters can expect.
TA: We don’t take ourselves seriously. We crack jokes, our songs teeter on the ridiculous, but all the guys are super-professional — and usually a bit drunk. It’s going to be loud, fast and WEIRD. I hope everyone’s suitably warned, because a first impression of us is usually one of complete incredulity. People who’ve never seen us will often run up to us afterwards to tell us how unusual we are… and then we see them dancing at the next show!
HEAVY: If you could get one band on the line-up to cover one of your songs who would it be and what song would they cover?
TA: I would be honoured if Rob Zombie and his brother, Spider One from Powerman 5000 teamed up and did our song Blast Off! as a duo. I would die happy.
HEAVY: How can fans find your music to get amped up for Dark Down South?
TA: We’re on all the usual streaming platforms, but for the latest Terror Adaptors madness, head over to our YouTube channel. We’ve got a collection of our more recent songs, live performances and various other bits of nonsense from a few different channels. It’s probably the best way to get a feel for what we’re about before we unleash ourselves on Dark Down South!
