Get ready to unleash the fury as Dark Down South III returns to Kirup this November 21 and 22, bringing two days of relentless metal mayhem to Western Australia’s South West. From Friday through Saturday, Jim McDonald Oval will once again transform into a haven for metalheads, showcasing a lineup that cuts across the full spectrum of heavy music. Headlining this year’s festival is a crushing lineup of extreme acts, featuring Mexico City’s unrelenting force Demente, the blistering grind chaos of Melbourne’s Nembutolik, the oppressive weight of Iniquitous Monolith, scene veterans Infected, and the raw, unfiltered energy of Melbourne’s Kunt Squad.
Backing them is a stacked undercard of Western Australia’s underground, including Psychonaut, DeadCode, Vanadium B.C., Oceans & Omens, Enforce, and Psytopia, alongside interstate chaos merchants like Adelaide’s Greedy Bunch of Parasites. Rounding out the lineup is a wave of emerging acts in Terror Adaptors, FistDead, Undeniable, Prophetic Execution, Deathcap Dinner Party, and Fuxion, each bringing their own flavour of noise, grit, and violence to the stage. Dark Down South III isn’t just about the music; it’s an immersive experience. With free camping, a BYO policy (no glass), and on-site food vendors, the festival delivers a full weekend escape built around community, volume, and connection. Designed as a family-friendly, all-ages event, it remains a rare space where generations of heavy music fans collide under one roof—or sky.
HEAVY sent out a list of questions to each band so we know what to expect before they set the stage on fire (not literally!), with GREEDY BUNCH OF PARASITES taking the bait today. But first, get to know the band a bit better…
Adelaide has bred some absolute weapon bands over the years, but Greedy Bunch Of Parasites (GBOP) are a completely different breed of sonic filth! Starting out as a casual Friday night piss-up project back in 2021, this relentless, genre-leaping three-piece outfit has mutated into one of the most exciting crossover groove-metal prospects in the country.
We’re talking a lethal cocktail of fast riffs, unhinged hardcore attitude, and zero apologies. They pull lethal inspiration from heavyweights like Sepultura, Slayer, and Lamb of God, but mutate it into their own brand of skull-crushing groove. Their 2024 Down & Out demo put everyone on notice, but it’s their live energy where the magic happens. If you want proof, just go spin their 2025 live EP, MAGGOTED. Tracks like Zombie House and Censor Me capture that pure, sweaty, chaotic pit energy perfectly.

GREEDY BUNCH OF PARASITES Q&A
HEAVY: DARK DOWN SOUTH OPEN AIR celebrates its third year as the only open air metal festival in WA this November. How excited were you to get the call up?
GBOP: GBOP were very surprised to get the call up, we applied through the Darkwolf Touring band submission last year not really expecting anything out of it. So, when we did get an email congratulating us we were taken aback. We are super excited to get over West, it’ll be our first time playing in WA.
HEAVY: How important are festivals like this to the Australian music scene?
GBOP: It is really important for smaller, more underground bands across Australia that a platform like this exists. There is a huge jump between playing bars and pubs to playing open air festivals, and giving small bands an opportunity to gain experience of playing this style of show is massive.
HEAVY: Have you ever been to DDS as a punter or playing?
GBOP: No this is our first time heading over west for DDS.
HEAVY: If so, best memories of the day, or if not, what are you most excited for? .
GBOP: We are super excited to see what the WA Metal scene is like! We are obviously versed in the Adelaide & South Australian scene, and have seen what Victoria can be like, so it will be great to see what the vibe and energy will be like in the West. Cannot wait to hit the stage and rip into some riffs.
HEAVY: It’s a long day of music. What will you be doing to make sure you will still be standing come your set time?
GBOP: We will be chilling out, making sure we get plenty of fluid and food into us. We are on Day 2, so Day 1 is going to be more of a party vibe, but we will take it a bit easier Day 2. We will likely have a killer sleep which will also help with energy levels.
HEAVY: Give me your Top 3 Festival survival tips.
GBOP: Sunscreen, Water & Food. Even if you are not hungry, eat something it helps with energy. Brando suffered heat stroke at the last Knotfest because he went so hard in the pit, which comes down to lack of fluids so you have to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. And, although not cool, sunscreen will help you survive multiple days out in the sun. As a bonus, definitely wear a hat aye!
HEAVY: Which band – other than yourself – do you think will get up to the most mischief on the day?
GBOP: Nembutolik – those guys are nuts!! Nicest dudes off stage, then they jump on it and you’re just like “what the actual fuck!!!” Definitely stick around for these guys!!
HEAVY: Run us through your typical live show and what punters can expect.
GBOP: We typically run it through a few vibes, we are a strange mix of groove metal, hardcore and crossover, so expect our songs to be short, heavy and make you want to move. We tend to start off fairly hard and fast before moving into a real heavy vibe, we then pick it up towards the end with songs like Hundo-P, Smoke n’a Smoke n’a Drink and our Iron Reagan cover of Fuck the Neighbours – this normally goes off very well.
HEAVY: If you could get one band on the line-up to cover one of your songs who would it be and what song would they cover?
GBOP: Demente – we would get them to cover smoke n’a smoke n’a drink. But, change all the lyrics to Spanish.
HEAVY: How can fans find your music to get amped up for Dark Down South?
GBOP: We have our music everywhere you can think. We have all our music and live set recordings on our YouTube – that will be one of the best spots to go.
