Sometimes it’s the little things that spark your interest. Little things like an opening line of “Meet Velour Fog. Our sound hits harder than a steel chair shot.”
One thing I have never encountered in all my years on this Earth is a shot from a steel chair, so if listening to Velour Fog’s second single Dopehead gives me any insight on how to approach this turn of events should they happen in the future, I’m all ears.
Kicking off with an almost Middle Eastern vibe, Velour Fog soon get their rock pants on courtesy of a spicy guitar riff, and things feel like they are going to get even nastier real quick.
An extended intro complete with the odd timing change here and there reminds me of old-school rock, which is exactly where I was hoping they would take me.
Things pull back a touch as the vocals slide in, part spoken word style with a swagger of whisky-drenched charisma that carries through until a restrained but wicked guitar solo that sings with a voice all of its own.
Then the casual and authoritative vocals return with an almost lethargic approach to proceedings that is impossible to resist.
Another, more free-flowing guitar solo ups the anti considerably before resuming the constant chugging underbelly that carries Dopehead to a stuttering conclusion that fades on the back of one final riff.
There is plenty going on here musically that is thankfully difficult to classify, so let’s just call Dopehead for what it is.
A damn fine piece of music. No labels, no genres, just Velour Fog, their music, and a shooting steel chair.
