If I was to say “name a metal band from Spain”, you’d probably struggle. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a plethora of talent in the country. The latest band to emerge from Barcelona is post-metal band Degraey. With the insane talents of drummer/unclean vocalist Cesar Perals, guitarist/singer Victor Paradis, Ivan Pizarro on guitar and synth and Luc Espinach on bass, the four-piece recently released their debut: ‘Chrysalis‘.
The album kicks off with From Them, a track with a soft, soothing guitar piece before turning into a much heavier song later on. The mostly instrumental track features lighter vocals by Paradis before Perals growls hit your ears and change the tone of the song completely. This is a powerful opener and truly shows how talented these musicians are.
Though there aren’t many vocals on this album, Shellhead is the only wholly instrumental track and you can’t help but feel it’s lacking something. It’s somewhat repetitive and I felt although the odd vocal part would’ve added something like they do for the remainder of the tracks. Perals mellower, post-rock style vocals blend very well with Perals heavier screams and death growls to really add something to the flood of sounds this album holds.
Chrysalis a very technical, and mostly instrumental album, and with the shortest song just under five minutes, the album comes in at a touch over an hour long. This is an album you need to be prepared to sit down and really listen to and, to be honest, I found it hard to listen to the whole thing in one sitting. Musically, it’s incredible but overall I just felt it was a tad too long and repetitive in parts. But if post-metal (mixed with post-rock, ambient and doom metal) is your thing then do yourself a favour and check it out. It’s available as a ‘name your price’ on their Bandcamp page.
