On 24 March, singers aged 19-61 from across Melbourne come together for Raise Your Horns!, a one-off theatrical concert paying tribute to the Gods of Metal. Performing with a live band at St Kilda’s iconic Memo Music Hall, the choral event features songs by Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Helloween, Metallica and Blind Guardian.
Presented by the Heavy Choir Project, this inaugural event is a showcase of Melbourne’s first ever heavy metal community choir, an inclusive and diverse group of singers who unite every Saturday to sing metal songs under the vocal direction of Ballarat resident and Judas Priest fan, Dee Davidson.
Founded by Emily Stekly, the Heavy Choir Project began in April 2021, after Stekly wanted a social outlet but felt like a misfit in other singing groups where the repertoire is typically pop music.
The choir’s debut in March is supported by a live band, and will mostly cover 80s power metal, with some thrash, symphonic, and hair metal thrown in. The audience can expect a fun, theatrical presentation, lots of big sopranic vocals, multi-harmonies and lung-bursting notes – with Davidson behind most of the original song arrangements.
The 90-minute concert features 13 songs, including a heavy metal duet cover of Dangerous Game from Leslie Bricusse’s 1990s Jekyll and Hyde musical, and a solo performance of a classic Australian rock anthem.
