This new release from local Melbourne Power Metal aficionados, Silent Knight, really packs a punch. There is so much metal might from the opening track, to the amazing album artwork by European designer’s All Things Rotten.
Following on from their Power Metal Supreme EP, released last year, the band have really found themselves here. Strong, thundering drumming, awesome twin guitar harmonies evocative of Iron Maiden, powerful bass lines, atmospheric synths, and an operatic, epic vocalist that will have you second glancing to check you’re not indeed listening to Iron Maiden. I could make all the comparisons under the sun, yet these guys somehow transcend them in some way. A standout track for me would have to be The Strike Of The Sword or The Call Of The Crow, both featuring some really impressive guitar playing and perfectly executed shredding.
Though it may not be a new concept for a metal band to include a cover in their release, more often than not it is unwelcome and disrupts the album’s flow and distracts from the band’s music. With their hilarious rendition of Europe‘s The Final Countdown, I can wholeheartedly say that that’s not the case on Conquer and Command. Silent Knight have outdone themselves, offering a huge slab of ‘80s nostalgia without coming off as cheezy.
