Unravelling the Mystery with LACUNA COIL

Share This:

Italian gothic metal legends Lacuna Coil returned earlier this month with the release of Black Anima, capitalising on the momentum garnered through 2016’s highly successful album Delirium.

Since early in their career when founding member and male vocalist Andrea Ferro brought Cristina Scabbia into the fold to join him in vocal duties, Lacuna Coil’s most distinct and dominant feature in the metal scene has been their twin powerhouse leads, but Ferro admits the transition was not immediately successful.

“Especially in the beginning”, he replied. “I would say the first three records we were struggling to understand where to go with the two voices. Obviously, Cristina and my voices are very different and we add completely different things to the music. She can bring a lot more melody and epicness while I can bring more violence and power so we needed to work together before we found the right balance. Nowadays we are very, very balanced. We know what we can bring to the music, we understand where to go with our voices but it took time because it was something new – both on the record but also in the live show where you have to find your space and your time and what to do when the other person is singing. It took time but along the way it has developed into something strong”.

In the full interview, Andrea discusses the reaction to Black Anima, the pressures of following up a successful last record, when to move on and when to reflect in the process, the birth of Lacuna Coil, the possibility of an Australian tour and more.
