UNDEROATH Testify To UNIFY

Share This:

If you needed any proof that Underoath are now one of the most popular heavy bands with Aussie fans then 2018 should have been the year that had you truly believing. First of all the hype around the release of their brand new album Erase Me was like something that as a heavy music journalist I hadn’t seen for years. Every second person seem to be asking me ‘have you heard the new Underoath yet? Have you? Have you?’ Then there was the speculation going around that they would headline a certain juggernaut music festival in Australia… that had Reddit excited… but then they went and surprised everybody by being announced as the headliners at Unify.

Well HEAVY Mag has just sat down and had a chat with Spencer Chamberlain about what fans can expect at the festival and boy is he excited about it all.

“We have never played Unify Festival before,” he says with a smile. “We got the offer to come to Australia, which is honestly one of our favourite markets because Australia has always been so great to Underoath over the years, so it was all a bit of a no-brainer for us. I mean this is a festival that we have heard about for a long time and suddenly they approach us about headlining and close one of the stages or something and we were like ‘woah… yes’. We are happy to be taking a trip down there, it will be our winter time and your summer time so it is the perfect escape for us.”

“Headlining a festival is always tough,” says Chamberlain when we talk about the honour that has been bestowed upon them. “When you do a headline show that is good you can do what you want and do your own thing but when it is a festival you obviously have a lot of people coming to see other bands all day long. I think the best slot you can have is second to last because no one is leaving, people are there to see the headline, others are milling around but when you are headlining you have a lot of people leaving that have come there to see other bands. They don’t know who you are or they don’t care, there isn’t really that opportunity to play for new fans. I mean we have been doing festivals all year and not headlining and that has been great for us because we have been abe to play for new people that are there to see Alice In Chains or Marilyn Manson or whoever happens to be playing last, so playing last is always pretty nerve-wrecking.”
