So, don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of The Omnific. So, this music is right up my alley, both as a listener and player of the heavy, emotive style of the musical spectrum.
I’ve also run the music past my 7-year-old lad, who likes everything from Slipknot to Kid Laroi. Basically, if this is your thing, the more you listen, the more you notice the depth and scope of each composition.
Opener D.H.D, is an insane exploration of a repeated groove and then has these amazing soundscapes over the top that form a melody and the pedal (repeated) electronica is given space to become a vital element in the piece of music. Taste in spades. 10 on 10.
Middle track Endless is next, and now, if you’re listening and not just hearing the music, it’s ramped up the tension, and we’re looking at playing with odd times, and giving the rhythm section a chance to shine.
And then the fills start, and the double time kicks in, and my son and I are smiling and dancing.
The Half-Time track has a melody that could be considered by some as modally pompous (think Dream Theater) when it’s just got that not heavy, not melodic, but I’m sure it’s technical in some way kind of sound), but Toby and crew manage to keep it interesting but still accessible to all.
And then, like any good song in this genre, Endless gives the listener’s ears a chance to to catch up with an awesome basic djent groove, and we get to hear the band build up again with grace and taste. 10 on 10 (The final chord stab that leaves the music non-resolved is gold btw).
And finally we’re left with the final track Break A Leg, which I’m guessing, is a play on the music. It has this groove that’s danceable, but it’s not a straight 4/4 groove, so to dance to it, may cause injury. Lol.
The constant movement in all melodic parts, whilst maintaining chordal integrity and still being accessible to the ears of those who like heavier music is pretty much on display perfectly with this track. 10 on 10
The e.p does seem to follow a musical format that is evident in each track, but as it’s only three songs it works well and kind of gives the overall project definition – since there’s no lyrics to tell a story – but despite the short journey I still feel like I have been on a Hell of a journey.
Overall, another banger from Australia, 5 on 5.
