THORNHILL – ‘The Dark Pool’

Share This:

Perhaps one of the most anticipated albums of 2019 comes from Australia’s very own Thornhill. After the amazing reception received by their 2018 Butterfly EP, heavy music fans have eagerly been waiting to see what the band would deliver with their debut feature – The Dark Pool. And, oh boy, I can tell you that these guys certainly have delivered.

One listen to The Dark Pool and you will instantly be in love with the album. The sound that these guys create is a sound so mature that you would swear that they have been delivering albums for a decade. There is no easing into things either. Thornhill smash you right in the face with their opening track, ‘View From The Sun,’ a track that seems them mix a traditional hardcore sound with some electronics while Jacob Charlton reveals that over the past eighteen months his vocals have morphed into something that now makes him one of the best front men in the business.

As you listen to The Dark Pool you realise that on this album Thornhill have not been frightened to take risks and the results speak for themselves. From the nearly proggy sounding instrumental ‘Netherplace’ to the almost melodic ‘Red Summer’, there seems to be nothing that these guys won’t try at least once.

In the best possible sense you never really know what to expect from track to track on this album. When Thornhill reach full flight on tracks like ‘Nurture’ and ‘In My Skin’ they reach heights that very few bands in the world can at the moment. A brilliant track like ‘The Haze’ will pull things back to a slower pace before the faster paced ‘Lily & The Moon’ lets things fly again before delivering some strangled and pained vocals that show that these guys put their full emotions into making an album that deserves to be labelled a classic.

Just when you think that Thornhill can’t possibly do anything to impress you they deliver what is one of the best tracks I have heard all year – ‘Where We Go When We Die.’ This is a track where everything seems to come together in a universe-shattering way.  Stunning guitar work from Ethan McCann and Matt Van Duppen collide nicely with Charlton’s vocals and what we are left with is a track for the ages.

The Dark Pool is an amazing debut feature from Thornhill. This album doesn’t only deserve to garnish attention here in the Australia but this should propel these guys into the heavy music scene right around the world.
