Alright, music lovers, strap yourselves in and clear some space on the floor because you’re going to need it! When it comes to the Australian heavy music scene, Brisbane has a legendary reputation for breeding some of the most fiercely uncompromising, sonically massive, and downright dangerous rock bands on the planet. But even in a city bursting at the seams with top-tier talent, few outfits have captured the raw, sweat-soaked chaos of a Friday night quite like Gutterfire!.
If you haven’t crossed paths with these absolute legends yet, let me lay it out for you straight. This is a band that completely refuses to be put into a neat little box. They call their signature blend of sonic warfare “upbeat doom,” and if that sounds like a beautiful contradiction, that’s because it bloody well is! It’s the kind of high-octane, post-apocalyptic hard rock that makes you want to bang your head until your neck snaps, while simultaneously shaking your ass as the world burns to the ground around you. It’s equal parts fuzzy stoner rock, punk-fueled aggression, and melodic hooks heavy enough to drop a medieval knight.
Ever since Gutterfire! detonated onto the local circuit around the turn of the last decade the five-piece powerhouse have been on an upward trajectory. They took the underground by storm with their stellar debut record Chill, attracting interest from global heavyweights Wormholedeath Records and dropped face-melting tracks like I’ll Be Along and Bonfire. They’ve shared stages with everyone from Electric Mary to Astrodeath, proving every single time that their live show is an absolute masterclass in pure, unadulterated energy.
And now, after a far too long absence, Gutterfire! have set the wheels in motion for a return assault on the national music scene, welcoming in two new members as they take the first tentative steps towards creating their second album. The creative process has been exciting thus far, with Gutterfire! recently completing the demo stage for a batch of new songs with a view to heading into the studio later this month to start laying them down proper. And, of course, the band will be road testing the new material live over a number of gigs between now and the end of the year, giving fans and punters not only an early glimpse into the next phase of Gutterfire!, but also possibly a small say in how the finished product turns out.
