The Return Of POSSESSED

Share This:

Way back in 1985 American death metal outfit Possessed exploded onto the scene with their album Seven Churches. That was followed in 1986 by Beyond The Gates then the band disbanded in 1989 following Jeff Becerra being paralysed from the waist down after being shot in a robbery.

Then nothing… not until 2007 when Becerra resurfaced and played under the Possessed name at Wacken Open Air Festival, now in 2019 Possessed return with Becerra out the front with their brand new album Revelations Of Oblivion. HEAVY Mag just had to sit down with Jeff Becerra to find out how it all came about.

“I went down to the crossroads and sold my soul to the devil,” says Becerra when I ask what led to the new material being written for the band. “His side of the bargain was that if I put this album out now I’ll get just a little chunk of everybody’s souls… lol no. In all honesty though it just felt like the time was right. A lot of people don’t know that we have been touring as Possessed in one form or another for the last thirteen years and so basically I just wanted to find the right people, people who deserve to be on this album, people that won’t let me down, people that won’t freak out or want to leave and live fucking normal lives, people I get along with, people who are good, people that fit into Possessed. Beyond the notes, beyond the phrasing and the timing and the musicality of Possessed there is something unspoken in Possessed, you really can’t become Possessed until you really fucking play the shit out of the old stuff and stop being influenced by other stuff.”

“There are hours upon hours and years upon years of conversation,” explains Becerra when I ask what has inspired with the lyrics for this album. “It’s funny because I could say something different every single interview and it would all be true…know what I mean? There is thirty-three years there, all the positives and negatives that have been in my life. There are spiritual demons that manifest in us during dark periods of our lives, there is politics, there is religion, fucking scepticism, spirituality, paganism, idolatry, Revelations from the Bible… there is just so much.”

Revelations Of Oblivion is out now through Nuclear Blast.
