Naarm/Melbourne-based metal band The Last Martyr have just announced their exciting EP and title track off the record, Requiem featuring Alt.’s Daniel Cullen-Richards, produced and mixed by Chris Lalic (Windwaker, Days Like These, RinRin). The record will be available for pre-order from Wednesday, September 18.
Requiem intertwines relentless rhythms with shadowy electronic textures, crafting a soundscape that is both menacing and hauntingly melodic. The track ebbs and flows between brutal breakdowns and ethereal vocal segments, where Monica Strut and guest vocalist Daniel Cullen-Richards unleash ferocious screams that dissolve into raw, vulnerable moments.
The Last Martyr talk about the inspiration behind Requiem:
“On the surface, ‘Requiem’ is a love song and this is definitely true, except this track is actually a love story between the Earth/Mother Nature and humans. ‘Requiem’ embodies the journey of the whole EP. All Earth wanted was to help us thrive, but humans took her love for granted with pollution, war, deforestation and hatred which is just as poisonous to the planet as any physical matter. The Earth is caring, but she is also vengeful, and in the end, Mother Nature fights back in order to restore balance. Guest vocalist Daniel sings from the human’s perspective shifting blame to and from human subgroups. In the end, he tried to bargain with Mother Nature, asking for a redo, but of course, that is impossible. It’s now too late, we’re at ‘Two minutes to midnight’, which is a reference to the doomsday clock.”
In the coming week, The Last Martyr will release the accompanying video for Requiem.
