The last twelve months has seen Brisbane alternative proggers Inovo embark on an epic project. The trio indulged in their love of cinema and set about to create an amazing looking video clip for their single ‘The Day Is Coming.’ But this wasn’t just any video clip… oh no there no ‘let’s record this in a white room’ for these guys, instead they started a journey which saw them shoot at three picturesque locations including the stunning Fraser Island while paying tribute to cinema classics like The Elephant Man and Kwaidan.
HEAVY Mag recently caught up with Declan Nicholls from Inovo to chat about the video clip and also the gig where they are supporting Opus Of A Machine this weekend.
“It has been a pretty busy past couple of years but we haven’t really had much to show people until,” says Nicholls with a laugh. “We have been working on this music video that we have just released for the past year and a half and to be honest it feels weird not working on it now. But yeah we have been working on new songs as well but it has all been in the works so now we are actually at a point where we can start showing people what we have been making which is really exciting.”
When talk turns to the clip for ‘The Day Is Coming’ Nicholls carefully explains it for their fans. “The clip is basically our guitarist’s interpretation of the meaning of the song. Basically when we write a song it will be one of us bringing the idea to the table and then we will kind of develop it together and then I will write lyrics over it of a story that I have created or something that I have been inspired by and in this case I was inspired by one of my favourite authors – a story by William Hope Hodgson and the story is called ‘The Voice In The Night.’ Now the story is actually pretty much completely different to what the video clip is but the clip is the interpretation of my lyrics by our guitarist, Rhys, so what you see is how he interpreted it. When he came up with the all ideas of characters and the different storylines and locations and that we started to develop it together and we were working on it and trying to work out the best way to try and convey it to people in such a way that it leaves it open to interpretation but also has that feeling of dread and fear that we were trying to capitalise on with the song.”
