THE BREW ‘Art of Persuasion’

Share This:

When one thinks of Grimsby, angry Soccer players, booze drivin’ looting and a Sasha Baron Cohen/ Rebel Wilson macking on scene come to mind! But the humble North England old town has something special within its confines, a Britrock band known as The Brew. This three piece have been on the scene for just over a decade now and have just dropped their sixth studio album Art of Persuasion.

The rock genre is a broad one and can have listener running comparisons on any band that leans towards such an ingrained and seasoned choice of sound. It takes craftsmanship and general respect for the founding Fathers of music to create a solid rock album these days, there are a lot of great bands out there doing just that and the bar is being raised every damn day! Art of Persuasion pleads a worthy case to fit right in with the high pedigree of talent that we all love, past and present. Opener “Seven Days Too Long” sees The Brew leap into the catchy rock lagoon head first. A resting heart rate down beat, palm muted riffage and long walks on the bass help compliment the vocals with the cherry on top being the layered vocal harmony throughout, it’s effective and creates a real feel good vibe.

The first taste of Art of Persuasion was given to us in the form of “Gin Soaked Loving Queen”, a slightly sexy rock tune that offers constant vocal hooks and a bass lesson in itself by Tim Smith (Bass/ Vocals) who gives us what seems like every note possible on the fret board during the mid-section of the track. It’s hard not to keep drawing attention to the vocal harmonies on Art of Persuasion but the quality continues with coupled vocals by Jason Barwick (Guitar/Vocals) and Smith on “Naked as I Stand”, they really do add a whole other layer atop of the instrumental rock fury. The drumming by Kurtis Smith keep the rhythm locked in time and time again with some sneaky ghost notes on the snare and some killer drum roles that will have fellow sticks man and ladies nodding their approval over and over.

Heading towards the end of Art of Persuasion “Ghost of the Nation” brings the art of rock to the front with a simplistic lyrical set that is easy to digest and will sit in ones cranium after the first listen. Barwick bends the strings a fair few times during the album but mostly on “Ghost of the Nation” which sees them get the best workout, the ever so slight fuzz guitar sound is infectious.

“Pink Noise King” sits at the back of this big red bus, it hovers and builds into a rock anthem within its own right, musically it becomes more rhythmically intense and sees the smooth vocal sounds almost turn into desperate pleas for mercy by the time the album is over!

If you like your rock with a bit of tang and class then The Brew have you covered with Art of Persuasion, it really is a well-rounded album that won’t see dust settle on it for many years to come! Play it loud!
