Talking Horror With MICHALE GRAVES

Share This:

Batten down the hatches Melbourne and Sydney because one of the Lords of Goth is in town this week. From a successful career with The Misfits through to critically acclaimed solo albums Michale Graves has earned himself a legion of music fans and nearly as many pop culture followers thanks to performance in movies such as Bruiser, Campfire Stories and Perkin 14.

While Graves was in Australia HEAVY Mag caught up with him to chat about his career and of course one of ours and his favourite topics – horror movies.

“I am very excited,” says Graves as we talk about the fact that this is the first time that his solo show has ever come to Australia. “I had the opportunity to come to Australia with The Misfits and with Marky Ramone but this is my first time with my solo work and I am really, really stoked… yes I am really, really excited.”

As the chat goes on we start to talk about the large number of Australian fans that he has and I ask whether he knew just how many he had before the tickets went on sale. “No, that is one of the things that is so exciting,” he says laughing. “This is on my terms and yes The Misfits were brave and with Marky Ramone things were great but this is on my terms, this is my music and I am humbled and I am really looking forward to have the opportunity to perform.”

“Well I promise to play all of the songs that everybody wants to hear,” he says when I ask what exactly those Australian fans have to look forward to. “I play a great selection off of American Psycho, all the hits are there but I also cherry-pick songs throughout my solo career as well so it is a nice mix of everything. I try to write a set list of songs that want and need to be played, songs that are relevant to the time. That really changes every time I go out so I also try to form the setlist around a story that involves all the different characters that are in the songs, but of course I have to try and fit that in with times and the zeitgeist as well. But I try to do my best to tap into all that and chose the songs that way.”
