TAISSA FARMIGA Talks The Horror Of THE NUN

One Melbourne critic recently quipped that he was going to take diapers to the Melbourne premiere of new horror flick The Nun. Giving the franchise that the film belongs to that wasn’t exactly a bad idea. The Nun tells the story of one of the most interesting characters to have graced James Wan’s Conjuring franchise (which also encases Annabelle) the creepy Nun, who looks like she should be in a Ghost video clip, whom has caused quite a few audience members to jump out of their skin as the franchise has evolved.

The Nun has a dark and Gothic feel to it and aside from creeping the beejeezus out of cinema-goers it will also introduce them to a young actress named Taissa Farmiga who is starting to make a name for herself in acting circles. Following in the footsteps of her famous older sister Vera Farmiga Taissa has been cutting out her own path in Hollywood appearing in films like The Bling Ring (with Emma Watson), Anna and The Final Girls. But it is The Nun that gives Farmiga the chance to show a wider cinema audience what she is capable of.

Farmiga beings by telling us about her character Sister Irene. “When we first meet Sister Irene she is a young woman who is on the path to becoming a Nun and that is not an easy accomplishment to try and achieve. It takes a lot of work and energy, it is a continuous struggle for self-perfection. So there is this young woman who doesn’t think she is perfect on a journey to reach a place where she is supposed to be perfect.”

Starring opposite Farmiga in The Nun is Mexican born actor Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight, Machete Kills) who plays Sister Irene’s mentor Father Burke and Farmiga is full of praise for her co-star. “Demian is such a funny guy, he is such a big personality. He is full of life and energy and it is interesting because he is playing Father Burke who is a priest and with a priest you think of strict and rigid and it is fun to have Demian who is full of life and love and just wants to show so much emotion in everything and it is a little bit more proper.”

It is also very obvious when she talks to see that Farmiga was a fan of this franchise before she was cast in The Nun. “One of the things about the Conjuring universe is that it is these elevated horror stories told with these grounded connections,” she says. “That it what the audiences respond to, the humans, the feelings, you are a real human watching these characters and responding to what they go through and what I love about The Nun is that it is in the same world so it has a similar vibe to that but it has its own story and it is set in a different part of the world. Of course there are a few Easter eggs that connect it which are fun, but that was a lot of fun for the audience and a lot of fun for the actors.”

The story line of The Nun also sees Farmiga’s character go through all the emotions humanly possible – fear, intrigue even an hint of love and that is what she liked most about the experience of working on the film. “I got to shoot so much, from stunts, to emotions to scares” she says laughing out loud.

The Nun will be released on DVD on the 19th December.
