THE FALLEN STATE ‘A Deadset Endeavour’

I have to admit, I love finding out about new bands. As soon as I heard of The Fallen State and their new single “American Made” I knew I had to listen to their album. The British rockers have made quite a name for themselves since their formation in 2013. Their forceful style and commanding presence are enough to keep you coming back time and time again. I was immediately impressed with what I heard of them and I can definitely hear why people have been rallying for them. So, with their new album A Deadset Endeavour coming, I wanted to have a listen to it to hear if they could carry that same intensity and passion to this new album.

Right from the first moments, this album really grabs your attention with solid production and some sharp songwriting. The Opening tune “Statements” is a broody and melancholy opener with an intense and visceral chorus. This continues into the rest of the album where the great songwriting details, even the more intense and fast-paced tunes the dark brooding lyrics still linger throughout this album. The music just sounds great. Like a mixture of 2010’s emo rock and early 2000’s alternative rock, it really hits you in the gut and stays there. The guitars are raw and the bass is nicely integrated. Over the top of the production of the instruments, you can hear a passionate vocal performance which is truly gripping.

There are a few downsides to the album. One being, that there aren’t any really good hooks and I can see it completely washing over the casual music listener who might find this on Spotify. The production is good but not great, I mean it sounds competently made but it’s really doing anything new. Is that a bad thing? Well, no, not necessarily. It’s a very functional hard rock record but I wouldn’t put it on my list of albums that are breaking down the boundaries of rock.

Overall, I will say that I am enjoying listening to The Fallen State. I would say the best track on the album, for my money, is “Attitude” just because it reminds me of songs from the American alternative rock scene or the British emo-punk invasion. It’s a decent record and I think people who listen to a lot of hard rock radio or find enjoyment in the hard rock playlists, will like this album a lot. It’s a solid effort and I am looking forward to what they do next and I also hope I get to see them live in the near future to hear how these songs translate. In summary, despite the shortcomings, thumbs up will keep listening.
