After last week’s announcement that Soulfly and Nailbomb were booked to play at next year’s Froth & Fury Festival’s in Perth and Adelaide, fans of both bands became restless. The “will they or won’t they” echoes reverberated around the country every time someone even whispered the words “side show”, and the possibility that the two shows would be exclusive had many scrambling to buy flights to either or both destinations before the prices skyrocketed.
Those fears were put to rest earlier this week – with interest – when it was announced Soulfly and Nailbomb would be teaming up for shows in other capital cities, with one of their close friends joining them to celebrate. Thus, the early pick for Show Of The Year has already been sealed with SNOT rounding out a three-way bill, touring Australia for the first time in over a decade.
Underground icon, extreme metal trailblazer, third world warrior, and the leader of a dedicated worldwide tribe, Max Cavalera not only survives but thrives, blasting out riff after killer riff. The same voice, body, and spirit which launched SOULFLY in 1997 summons impossibly heavy noise to this day, throwing down slabs of monstrous music.
Soulfly‘s savage output has pushed extreme music to its bludgeoning limits while injecting it with brilliant moments of trippy nuance and dissonance. Like all innovative musical heroes, Max makes anthems for the people. Soulfly is a celebration of family and legacy. Whatever Max Cavalera hammers out on the bridges of his four-string guitars, it always sets souls free.
NAILBOMB‘s impact on both the metal and industrial scenes is undeniable, with their raw, intense sound marked by a fiercely aggressive tone and outspoken political commentary. The project fused thrash, punk, and industrial elements into a harsh, uncompromising sonic assault. Their only studio album, Point Blank (1994), became a cult favourite for its abrasive riffs, distorted electronics, and anarchic energy. Nailbomb‘s influence can be seen in the rise of industrial-infused metal acts and in the continued exploration of socio-political themes in extreme music. Despite their brief existence, the band carved out a lasting legacy by pushing the boundaries of what metal could sound like.
SNOT emerged from the late 1990s nu-metal and hardcore scenes, creating an everlasting legacy that still shines bright today. Their high-energy groove-heavy sound stood out in a crowded scene, and their all killer no filler debut album, Get Some, became an instant classic. Their fusion of genres and DIY ethos influenced so many bands within the nu-metal and post-hardcore movements. They make a most welcome return, bringing their legendary live show back to Australia for the first time in over 10 years.
